Press Statement
Press Statement: Tibetans Urge President Obama to Speak on Tibet Issues During US-China Summit New York- In light of the news of Chinese president Hu Jintao’s upcoming visits to meet with President Obama in Washington DC, coalitions across the United States are organizing joint protests to show in number the mounting disapproval with China’s policies towards Tibet and Tibetans. The 3 day protest beginning January 18th and ending January 20th will aspire to bring attention the massive human rights violations that are continually taking place every day in Tibet. We urge President Obama to engage in meaningful and lasting dialogue with President Hu Jintao about Tibet’s situation. It will be evident as Tibet and Tibet supporters will crowd the streets of Washington DC to show our utter discontent with President Hu Jintao. Throughout the years of Chinese occupation, Tibetans have been stripped of their cultural identity and their basic human rights. Tibetans living in Tibet live in constant fear and are not happy as the Chinese government claims. Since then, no body of authority has adamantly spoken on behalf of the Tibetan people for their full rights as people. As freedom loving people, we cannot afford to ignore human right violations any longer. Our aim for these series of protest is to spark the much needed attention towards Tibet and our cause. The Tibetan people’s dedication towards their identity and the preservation of it is much to be admired.
Jan 18th, 2010 REPORT
Snow more snow, icy roads, needs to drive people to DC we did it. 114 people in two busses and 22 people in 2 passenger vans. It took us almost 8 hours to get to DC. Protest started at 9 AM at Chinese embassy with people chanting slogans like Free Tibet, China out of Tibet, Hu a failed leader, CCP a dead Party, Independence for Tibet etc etc. Many people from other states joined us in the protest. National anthem ended the program at Chinese Embassy which was followed by a march to White House.. It was a long march to be exact 3.2 miles and the roads were slippery. A protestor slipped and fell on the way but she got up despite bring bruised, old and having knee problems, she insisted on walking and staying got all 3 days. We ahd to force her in the bus to go back for her good. We were cheered on by many people enroute to the white house.. We will miss u Ama Dolkar as we call her. Tibetans and supporters braved cold weather and chanted slogans all day. Some tea did help us brought in by some people from DC. Hu Jintao’s state dinner wasn’t as quiet as he might have wanted at 6pm when it was starting to get dark. Visible from where we were and earshot away, I am pretty sure he must have heard us and had to think about us. Mission accomplished for the day. SO many more days ahead, but the DC trip will conclude in 2 days when Hu leaves fro Chicago. We will then pass the baton to RTYC Minnesota.
